Nitro Funny cars (DEAD or ALIVE)

Re: Nitro Funny cars (DEAD or ALIVE)

The average spectator doesn't understand dial in.So why stuff up top fuel by putting in a handicap drag racing in group 1 is one on one.Thats the way it should stay.

Re: Nitro Funny cars (DEAD or ALIVE)

Top Fuel is about 10,000 a run... outlaw Funny Cars will be under half that...now do the maths..never mind they will be less maintenance and no where near the parts carnage and making it a lot cheaper overall to run one.......even before the group is in the rule book there will be 14 cars out there....and if they allow fuel Altereds in too I can see two more in that too...Only one point (only for about 2 years) in the last 30 years we ever had good numbers of top fuel cars...I can see 5 rounds of Fuel and 5 rounds of the funny cars..Everyone loves Fuel cars..me too..but the cost is so high that puts a lot of people off running one...bring down the rounds..add a new nitro bracket so you have two rounds nitro rounds at major tracks...everyone is happy...just dropping a few rounds would drop the running cost by around the $200,000 a year for the fuel teams..

Europe and New Zealand.

I'm not sure what fuel they were using and I never saw them AFAIK.
Torana funny cars. Bruce Philips, Jim Read
Monaro funny cars. Alan Walton, Ray Zygadlo, Norm Oakey, Martin/Miles/Wileman "Shaker"
I have seen the restored Shaker.

Re: Nitro Funny cars (DEAD or ALIVE)

Correct Ralph,
In addition,Peter Russo ran a Commodore Funny Car for a very short time in the 80's
John Zappia had a version of his Monaro and ran it as a Funny Car in Comp/AA/FC for a short time.

Re: Nitro Funny cars (DEAD or ALIVE)

Alan Walton ran a Torana Funny Car; Zappia ran a Statesman body on an alcohol FC; Jeff Burnett ran a Valiant Charger body on an FC once (I think?). Atholwood ran a Torana body as well.

Now, if those gentleman running in Outlaw NFC ran a few Australian bodies on those cars...wouldn't that be something? How successful would V8 Supercars be if they were Monte Carlos racing against Ford Thunderbirds? No-one would give a shit! Australian drag racing needs to get its head around recognisable content. I loved Pro Stock in the old days because someone in a Monaro or Tornana raced someone in a Ford Falcon or Cortina. Top Fuel is Top Fuel, but Funny Car, Pro Stock and Top Doorslammer are "bodied" vehicles. You put a one-piece Zaps Rat body on one of those Outlaw NFC cars and you've got a pitched tent in the trouser department!

Re: Nitro Funny cars (DEAD or ALIVE)

Remember that this outlaw nitro funny car bracket is still only an exhibition bracket even if it's going to be placed in the rule book. So you may not see them at championship rounds.

Its always good until it turns bad!

Re: Nitro Funny cars (DEAD or ALIVE)

You've said it yourself Ralph just listing the cars Which are some of the most Iconic in our history. There hasn't a been a new Bodied car that we can relate too since the Eighties. The F/C's don't resemble a current car at all.

As far Europe & NZ goes their in same boat as us.

Watching some you tube lately ESPN telecasts ,They try to Hype up the class the same with PSC. Take out JFR influence & the class would be in trouble.

Re: Nitro Funny cars (DEAD or ALIVE)

Ralph,

Where was that pic of the "Concerned" FC taken?

Surely someone out there can take a fibreglass plug off Zaps Monaro and stick it on an Outlaw NFC!

Re: Nitro Funny cars (DEAD or ALIVE)

Why don't the Nitro dump trucks run their own series, outside of ANDRA, for arguments sake, under the banner of NHRA, with a back up show of say, outlaw pro mod, wheelstanders and a couple of jet cars, or even create other classes that have no specific bracket in ANDRA, maybe they could run a winter series, put in say, 5 rounds between May and September.
If the F/C guys wanted to do this, would the tracks or any racers be penalized by ANDRA, are the tracks ANDRA dedicated or dominated, and would they allow other affiliations to run events.  Why does Australian Drag Racing have to run under one controlling body. Maybe a little competition for ANDRA is just what the sport needs!

Re: Nitro Funny cars (DEAD or ALIVE)

The Shaker and the Spoiler are Australia's Mongoose and Snake. I would love to see them resurrected.

Re: Nitro Funny cars (DEAD or ALIVE)

Zappia's Funny Car wasn't a version of his Monaro, it was the latest Holden Caprice body at the time (1996).
