The power is real for Morgan

Darren Morgan says his AEG Top Fuel dragster is ‘made of power’, much like his sponsor’s slogan, but learning to manage that power is where the secret lies if he wants to win Coates Hire West Coast Nitro this weekend at Perth Motorplex.

Morgan took a runner up spot at the last round of the 400 Thunder championship in Sydney, losing on a holeshot to US driver Cory McClenathan in the final round.

The Victorian racer said he always tries to have the latest generation gear on his car so the power is not an issue.

“We didn’t change much for Sydney from what we had used the year before in Perth. There wasn’t big changes to do, we try and run it with the latest stuff we can get,” he said,

“For Perth there is nothing too much different we will be doing apart from some clutch disc changes.

“We are getting to learn it,last time we ran in Perth it made so much power that we had to run the car calmly. It’s learning how to control that power and standing on it when we can.

“But most importantly we’re trying to make it the best show it can possibly be.”

While the field numbers are small, the quality is high, with US-trained Rapisarda Autosport International and Mark Sheehan’s own rocketship ready to duke it out.

Morgan said his approach is a little different to that of the Rapisardas.

“Santo (Rapisarda) is all about how quick he can go and we are about getting from A to B,” he said.

“It’s the best cars in the country. The 400 Thunder thing is looking at our sport differently and hopefully that will change it for the better.”
