In a shock statement, Kwinana Motorplex Pty Ltd has announced its decision to withdraw from the tendering process for Perth Motorplex.

KMPL (Kwinana Motorplex Pty Ltd) was one of the shortlisted proponents in this process.

Due to personal and family reasons, the Directors of KMPL have recently decided to withdraw from the tendering process.

In early 2015, Gary Miocevich, the long-term managing director for KMPL, passed away. Gary devoted many years to the development of the sport in Western Australia, bringing tireless enthusiasm to the task. Gary’s passion for the sport was instrumental in the creation of the Perth Motorplex in 2000, which combined the sports of drag racing from Ravenswood Raceway and speedway from Claremont Speedway. The directors of KMPL acknowledge the outstanding legacy Gary has left, from which all enthusiasts of the sports benefit.

The Miocevich family has substantially supported and contributed to the sport of drag racing for more than 35 years and speedway for more than 20 years. Now is an appropriate time to provide the opportunity for another party to assume the role of managing Perth’s premium automotive sporting facility. The board of KMPL consider it to have been a privilege to have collaborated and worked with the thousands of racers and their fans, who have supported the sport, to make the Perth Motorplex the most successful fixed motorsport facility in Australia.

KMPL will cease operations at the Perth Motorplex on 30 June 2016 and all creditors and staff entitlements will be paid in full.

The KMPL board express gratitude to all VenuesWest personnel, for their wonderful support during the 15 years to date. The KMPL team will work with VenuesWest to ensure a smooth transition to a new venue manager.

Venues West has issued the following statement:

The current operators of Perth Motorplex have announced their decision to withdraw from management of the venue, due to personal and family reasons. Kwinana Motorplex Pty Ltd will manage the venue until 30 June 2016.

VenuesWest, which has owned the venue on behalf of the State Government since 2000, is now investigating all available options in regards to the management of the venue in 2016 and beyond.

The safety of competitors and spectators is always VenuesWest’s highest priority; therefore a thorough assessment of safety and technical resourcing will be undertaken before considering what will happen at the venue after the usual winter closure.

Perth Motorplex is WA’s premier motorsports facility and welcomes community participation in speedway and drag racing competition as well as hosting major motorsport and entertainment events throughout the season.

Perth Motorplex receives around 235,000 visitors annually to compete in or watch nearly 80 regular community based drag racing and speedway events as well as experience several major entertainment events throughout the year.

Over the coming weeks VenuesWest will work closely with KMPL, relevant stakeholders, sanctioning bodies and venue suppliers to consider the options for Perth Motorplex. VenuesWest acknowledges KMPL’s contribution to motorsport within Western Australia.

VenuesWest is Western Australia’s provider of premier sports and entertainment venues and its portfolio includes the world class Perth Arena and the redeveloped nib Stadium as well as Perth Stadium to be completed in 2018.

These are in addition to HBF Stadium, HBF Arena, WA Athletics Stadium, Bendat Basketball Centre, Midvale SpeedDome, Perth Motorplex, Champion Lakes Regatta Centre, WA Rugby Centre, State Netball Centre and the Western Australian Institute of Sport High Performance Service Centre.
