ANDRA and Bob Jane in talks

The possibility of ANDRA championship drag racing returning to Victoria’s Calder Park Raceway has become a prospect with sources indicating government funding may be received in return for the track being upgraded to ANDRA safety specifications.
Bob Jane has been provided with a Heads of Agreement for a believed investment of $10 million from the Victorian Government if Jane makes the return to ANDRA and CAMS.

It is understood that senior ANDRA staff met with Calder Park owner Bob Jane and discussed the future plans for upgrades at the facility, which as part of the funding will also include a circuit for a return of CAMS-sanctioned motorsport.

It is believed ANDRA will soon inspect the facility to understand what elements are in place and what is needed for a safe return of racing.

What is known currently is that the safety barriers must be moved track side for the full length of the track with no breaks and the braking area, which narrows along its distance, must be addressed  with the addition of an adequate sand trap and other safety features.

The issue of noise restrictions on the venue is also being investigated with Jane claiming there are no such restrictions. The Motorvate Melbourne team updated its Facebook page last night claiming only nitro and jet-powered vehicles would be exempt from noise restrictions with supercharged vehicles likely to exceed limits.

A main source of contention in the past has been insurance between the two parties and this will need to be resolved with Jane wanting to provide his own cover.

Motorsport News this week published an article indicating plans to bring back CAMS racing.

Calder Park has a turbulent history with ANDRA championship drag racing, with the relationship ending in 2000 when ANDRA was forced to step in to run the Nationals.

Should Calder Park be brought up to comply with ANDRA standard, then ANDRA must adhere to their wishes to return to ANDRA sanctioning.

Heathcote Raceway Park has also been invited to discussions about a return to ANDRA sanctioned racing.
