Round two of the Queensland Drag Racing Championships at Willowbank Raceway saw the seasons first appearance of the new QDRC Outlaws class venture, a combination of blown turbo and nitrous machines.

First off though it was also the season debut for Super Comp which had six competitors contest two rounds of racing, with the best performers facing off in the final.

Tony Bellert must of had the opposition rattled as both Rob Coleman in his BB/GA Mustang and Mark Sugars’ little D/Gas Cortina leaving cherries on the tree against him during the racing rounds, the result was a finals birth for the dragster driver.

Bellert’s A/DA would face Shane Moran’s A/APA Monte Carlo after also defeating Sugars in round one and Omar Sedmak who is now racing a altered in round two. With tardy reactions in the final by both racers, Bellert’s 7.02 (7.35IN) was way to good for the sedan’s 7.54 (7.53IN).

The new QDRC Outlaws bracket had 13 entrants compete in the two rounds of racing, though now open up to all kinds of supercharging assistance there was only one nitrous car in a field of blowers.

Bevin Buckby, Dean McClennan, Chris Vanthof, Luke Marsden and Bill Fletcher all picked up two wins, the finalist would be decided on closest to their dial in during the final round of racing. Vanthof’s tight 6.869 (6.86) win over Justin Simpson’s nitrous Monaro and Bill Fletcher’s 6.735 (6.72) win over son Josh was a mere breath better than Marsden’s 6.769 (6.75) result, setting up a Vanthof versus Fletcher final.

The Corvette of Vanthof cut down the tree with a .028 reaction, this would prove the difference when Fletcher stormed through with a 6.737 (6.73), it was not enough to make up the start line difference. Vanthof’s 6.876 (6.85) good enough for a holeshot win.

Modified was contested over a more traditional three round Chicago Shootout format. Mark Allan had three wins but a backing off third round win against Mitchell Dell would cost the dragster driver a finals birth, likewise Phil Bellert scored his third round win against a red lighting Matthew Loy but was way off his final round dial in too.

Also with three wins Kellie Kidd and Michael Bailey were the best performers in the last racing round and would do battle in the final. The red light flashed up however in Bailey’s lane, the roadster driver had left with a -.007 light and Kidd in her dragster would power on for a win.

Super Sedan being the large field it was there was always going to be a number of racers finishing on maximum points. It was also unfortunate that seeded rounds resulted in a extraordinary number of bye runs which made up half the passes in a round due to withdrawn racers, this is something that will need to be looked at for the spectators.

After wading through all the results the final would be a pair of Fords, Allan Grimsey’s Capri had the jump in chasing down Adam Solomon’s Probe, a 9.22 (9.19) from the Capri held off the Probe’s charging 8.67 (8.65) in a holeshot victory.

IMG 6847Rob Price drove his Torana out the back door in the Super Street final with a  11.77(11.80) breakout, it was all inconsequential when opponent Andrew Stathis fouled by four thousandths with his VL Commodore.

Switching over to two wheels, Peter Jones scored a comfortable win in Modified Bike aboard his Harley when Chris Collin’s Suzuki was well off its usual pace in final.

Six car fought out Super Gas honours, Dave Gauldie was the only automatic qualifier for the final with three wins, the other finalist went to a count back with Patrick Barron benefiting on that. Both racers pushed each other to the brink in the final with a double break out result, Gauldie’s 9.896 defeating Barron’s 9.873.

Dylan Leo and Ali Mundey were the unlucky racers in Junior Dragster missing out on a final birth after being perfect with round wins, also three for three winners Tim Barron and Eden Ward were the better round three performers and grabbed the final slots.

The final was decided on the start line, Ward bringing on the red light presenting the win to Barron.
