The WA Grand Final this weekend not only decides many of the state drag racing championships but also a memorial award in memory of Kate Scott.

So why is the Kate Scott Memorial trophy so special to drag racers in general and motorcycle drag racers in particular? Mick Sargent, a champion motorcycle drag racer, and his girlfriend Kate, who also loved the people in the sport, were tragically involved in the Port Arthur massacre in 1996.

On April 28, 1996, Mick Sargent and then 21 year old girlfriend Kate Elizabeth Scott were enjoying Tasmania in general and Port Arthur in particular.

Kate was a tragic victim of the massacre.

Kate’s mother, Mrs Wendy Scott, had recalled that the pair had hired a car for the day and had gone to look at Port Arthur, planning to fly home that afternoon.

Their bags were packed and they were ready for the hour-long drive to Hobart after they finished lunch when the gunman struck.

About 30 hours later, Mrs Scott was at home with her husband, Miles, in Watheroo, 211 kilometres north of Perth, when they were told that the oldest of their five children was dead.

“Kate was such a lovely girl,” she said. “She was lively and bubbly and no-one ever said a bad word about her or heard her say a bad word about anyone else. She was on top of the world and everything was going so well for her.”

Mrs Scott said Kate was due to start a permanent job at Gidgee goldmine near Meekatharra when she returned from a few days’ holiday in Tasmania.

All of us in drag racing would like to extend our deepest thoughts and wishes to those who knew Kate and may everyone during the Grand Final event – remember her in the spirit in which she lived.

The winner of the memorial is decided by the best reaction time out of the winners of Competition Bike and Modified Bike.
