During qualifying for Top Fuel at the Fuchs Winternationals today, 39 year old Mildura Top Fuel racer Phil Lamattina suffered a major chassis failure in his Fuchs Top Fuel Dragster, resulting in a severe crash.

Lamattina (pictured above with crew chief Aaron Hambridge) was conscious and alert following the incident, and transported to hospital for further tests by on-track medical staff after Lamattina complained of back pain.

Lamattina Top Fuel Racing team co-owner Angelo Lamattina said: “My brother Phil has been involved in an accident, all we know at this time is that he is alive and well with some serious back pain. He has been taken to the hospital for further scans to find out what is causing the pain. He was talking to medical personnel at the time.”

At this stage, the Lamattina family has requested that no footage or images of the incident be release. Further updates will be supplied by Willowbank Raceway on behalf on the Lamattina Top Fuel Racing team as appropriate.

UPDATE: Phil suffered a shattered vertebrae in the incident. Surgeons have advised that a full recovery is expected and the team will keep everyone up to date with his progress over the coming days. The family thanks all for the well wishes and support.

Video of Phil Lamattina's chassis failure has now been released to media. We are so glad Phil is okay after this major incident. For updates on Phil's condition – http://www.dragnews.com.au/index.php/news-all/local-news/2872-lamattina-alive-and-well-taken-to-hospital-following-chassis-failure
