Okay the Nostalgia racing scene in Australia is not quite the same as seen at places like Bakersfield, but we do alright for what we have and recently at Sydney’s Cruzin’ Magazine Nostalgia Drags event the revival of the fuel altered certainly has plenty on nostalgia buffs salivating.
The Cowin Racing stable delivered “Berzerk” in front of the fans for the first time with Rick Gauci steering. The goal of Australia’s first five second fuel altered would have to wait until another day after a 6.08 at 243mph had the teamed primed to go for the fives until the event ended prematurely.
Shane Olive was paired in the other lane in Psycho III making it the first side by side fuel altered race in….well a very long time.
Sitting ominously quiet – for now – in the pits were another two just awaiting final touches before they hit the track with fuel altered fury. The above ride belongs to Andrew Hurst and will be ready to go once some final engine components are received.
Alongside was the Phil Tucker owned, Stephen Brown driven ride. The car was the ex Richard Botica fuel altered and has undergone chassis and body modifications and is also in the final stages of its build.
Norm Longfield has given his nitro FED the Competition Coupe treatment.
Longfield sacrificed some timing blocks, but we are not sure if that was a visibility issue or FED’s just doing what they do.
“AA” Dave Armstrong had no qualms with timing blocks and rocketed his FED down track for a pair of 6.3 second laps.
Four Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Cars took to the track in preparation for their next major outing at Willowbank in a few weeks. Shane Olive in LA Hooker blasted a 5.88, Justin Walshe in Let’s Boogie was even quicker with a 5.86, The General with Daniel Schultz at the wheel pulled a 6.05 and Paul Messineo in the Dark Horse did not make a full pass.
Other highlights on the day saw Frank Mamone battle extreme tyreshake with his Barracuda Top Doorslammer but did pedal to a 6.51.
Michelle Davies shows no fear wrestling her Outlaw 10.5 Torana down the track and smashing PB’s with a 6.44 making husband Gareth rather cheerful.
