Scrap metal

One of drag racing’s veteran race cars has been lost in an on track accident.

“Scrap Metal”, the iconic Cortina campaigned for many years by Patricia and Geoff McNiff, was being driven by daughter in-law Louise at the Day Of The Drags event at Sydney Dragway on the 22nd May.

Louise, who has driven the car a number of times before, impacted the left hand wall after breaking traction when the car left outside of the groove. The first impact caused the throttle to jam open and accelerate the car heavily into the right hand wall. Louise was transported to the hospital where she has been diagnosed with several broken veterbra and will have to spend eight weeks in a neck brace.

Despite the heartbreaking lost of such a renowned car the McNiffs’ only concern was with Louise, Geoff has already started stripping what can be salvaged from the Cortina for a new project and the shell will become a “garden gnome” according to Geoff.
