The QLD tyre and retreading team of Greg and Kim Clayton, reaped the rewards for all the hard work put in over the past four seasons , claiming their first Gold Christmas Tree and taking maximum points for the first round in the Aero Flow Sportsman,  Australian drag racing championship.

While the week started off somewhat in chaos, with Greg badly twisting an ankle while loading the car for the Sydney road trip. The team put that behind them during qualifying, where the car recorded another number one qualifying position with a stout 6.13 second run, in the Competition eliminator bracket.

”We knew we had the power with the new PSI supercharger and Ken Lowe fuel system on board, plus Fuchs Lubricants now protecting the internals of the engine, we only needed to stay consistent and drive well to be in with a chance of winning the event,” explained Clayton.

“We had no issues during qualifying and our new associate sponsor Fuchs Lubricants provided some valued oil for this event and it stood up to the test through qualifying and race day”.

The team had a bye run in the first round of racing which helped set the platform for the quarter final match up against the always tough Magg’s team.

“My crew were outstanding in preparing the car all weekend and that allowed me to concentrate on driving and cutting good reaction times through eliminations”, Clayton continued.

“To win the Australian nationals is a dream come true for the entire team and we are still pinching our selves, it’s a little surreal to be honest.  Without the support of our sponsors QTR, Bridgestone Select Salisbury, RD Williams, Fuchs Lubricants, we could not have done it, and the win is as much theirs as it is ours”.

The GKC / QTR team look forward to the remainder of the series, which kicks off again in January 2013, at Portland raceway in Victoria.
