Troy Slamar and his family are planning a season chasing the national Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship this year and says it is all about having fun for the growing team.

Slamar competes in Super Sedan with children Jasmine and Lachlan enjoying driving in Junior Dragsters.

With his own business going well, Slamar shipped off to the USA several years back to supervise the building of a Ford Falcon Super Sedan and ensure the family fell in love with drag racing, something he first got hooked on back in the days of Ravenswood Raceway.

“We are doing this as a family thing so everything that happens at the track, we try and make it fun,” he said. “My partner and kids raced in America and loved it.”

While the Falcon was being built, Slamar also had the opportunity to put together a second race car, a Pontiac GTO, or in Australian terms – a Holden Monaro. The car has recently seen its first track time since being brought to Australia.

Despite its impressive looks, Slamar said it was a car built to a budget, with many parts simply coming from Craigslist or eBay.

“I was going to leave the car behind for racing in the USA, it only owes me $25,000,” he said. “It’s taken us two years to get it to the track here and we didn’t change a lot, we ran it on pump gas just to clear it out and it ran 9.31.

“We decided to try race fuel, my partner ended up grabbing my lawnmower fuel by accident and it still went out and ran 8.80s.

“Kids can tune it and that is exactly what I want, it is set up to race with my older daughter Kayla.”

Slamar’s own Falcon should be on track for the Westernationals, with plenty to left to develop in the car before the team begins travelling.

“My car has a lot to sort out computer wise. Maybe I shouldn’t have gone so high tech, but at the time I was convinced I was doing the right thing,” he said. “You’ve got 2200 horsepower straight away. For the Westernationals I will have someone out here from the States to set it up properly.”
