$6.00 entry, must of been prior to the TV levy.

Re: Old racing pics

Drag racing was on TV then and the racers didn't have to pay for it.

Andy, would any of that old footage exist anywhere?
Channel 0 I think.

Hi Ralph,I'm about 99.99% certain there isn't going to be much lying around. Most TV stations purged their archives in the late 70's early 80's of stuff deemed not important. It's only by the grace of good operators that a lot more wasn't thrown out.
There would be a lot of stuff in private collections I would guess.
The oldest thing I have is an interview with Don Garlits when he visited Aus.

$1000 prizemoney in 1966. How much would(should) that be in 2012?

The average wage in 1966 was at around $3,500.
So with prize money back then being $1,000, that is just over 25% of the average wage.

The average wage now is around $60-65,000.
So prize money now should be around $15,000.

But considering that the cost of living in comparison to the average wage increase in the last 40+ years has grown considerably more, prize money should be around $50,000+.

For example, the average home in 1966 was $10,000, now the average home is at around $500,000.

It is hard to figure it out without knowing the exact figures of inflation since the 60s.

Re: Old racing pics

We have some stuff on VHS from ABC and SBS back in the early 80's but nothing older than that.

Re: Old racing pics

The $1000 back then for the total prize pool isn't much compared to the $160,000 approx prizemoney pool at todays national events !!
