Power handled, Glover hopes for championship win

WA drag racer Brett Glover is hoping to capitalise on a bank of national championship points he has built up when he travels to the Winternationals in Queensland in June.

The Winternationals is the final event of the season and thanks to a Westernationals win earlier in the series, Glover has a considerable points haul in hand for the Super Stock category.

At times, Glover’s turbocharged Mazda RX7 has been tricky to tame, with its unique power band tending to unload the tyres and cause loose passes. But the team feels they now have a set up that can handle the power.

“The track is going to be difficult for us to get used to but we have been very consistent in Perth and will leave most of the setup where it is and work hard to be at the pointy end of the field,” he said. “We are taking a few different gearbox ratios with us in case we have problems getting off the startline.”

Glover won’t have it easy, with one of the largest Super Stock fields in some time set to take on the event. But he believes that the team will be skilled enough to make an impact.

“With 20 cars in the field we feel very confident that we can qualify well,” he said. “After testing in Perth we ran fast in the first half of the track and believe we will go under the national record and deep into eliminations. It will be a really tough field so we will have to be at our best to win.”

Glover has never won a national championship before but it is a trophy he would like to add to the mantelpiece.

“After 20 years of racing it is a great opportunity for us to win our first national championship,” he said. “It would be great to get the championship as we have all worked really hard for many years to get where we are now and it is something that as a driver would be very satisfying.”
