The 47th edition of the Fuchs Winternationals kicked off at Willowbank Raceway today with qualifying in Groups Three and Four in the Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship.
Modified provided some fireworks as Andrew Musgrave sits atop a quick field after two qualifiers with a best of 6.437 from Shane Seawright on a 6.697 followed by a flood of seven second passes from 3rd all the way to 23rd promising some great action when qualifying resumes on day two.
Greg Wardle who currently occupies 34th went 1.8 seconds under the National B/HR record of 10.53 with an 8.771.
Super Sedan provided the hairiest moment of the day as Colin McGill hit the wall hard after a sharp left hand turn at approximately 500 feet down track while at the other end of the scale Neil Maxwell recorded 7.394 to occupy first spot from Darren Saliba, Garry Brett, Harry Somer and Tony Agius going into day two.
Super Street completed the full complement of qualifying passes as Shawn Taskis ran an 11.028 taking top spot going into eliminations on Saturday. He leads the field from Lucas Holz, Kerry Janssen, Katrina Bonato and Nicholas Smith in fifth.
In other qualifying Reegan Ward is currently first in Modified Bike thanks to his effort of 8.578 followed by Daniel Selki, Denis Ryan, Kevin Cleeve and Anthony Duncan while Super Gas is lead by Jake Culmore on a 9.912 from David Gauldie, Loughlin Boyde, Gary Clarke and Simon Isherwood.
Finally in the junior ranks Caleb Oberg and Cory Burns ran identical 8.004s to occupy first and second from Josh Lenello, John Fenech, and Bianca Humphreys.
Final qualifiers for Modified, Super Sedan, Modified Bike and Super Gas will be held tomorrow (Friday 6 June) from 8am. Qualifying for all other categories commence from 9:30am.
