10 years after Maurice Brennan debuted his original Commodore doorslammer, the West Aussie is set to let the Holden Lion roar once again in the class.
Built in Brennan’s shed with a bunch of his mates, the original Commodore became a regular sight around the country, and ended up setting national and track records in AA/AP before going on to compete in Top Doorslammer.
With business and family commitments taking priorities in Brennan’s life, the car was retired with the eventual plan of rebuilding it for his son Kade to compete with it.
With the itch back to return to racing Brennan started investigating new machinery.
“After much thought and research on different brands of chassis, it was decided to purchase a Tim McAmis Racecars chassis,” said Brennan.
“The first bar work commenced in august 2018, and it arrived in the country in March 2019. Due to work commitments and a growing business, progress was slow, with no extra time to keep the build moving forward.
“Fortunately for me, Wayne and Lisa from Keys Family Racing offered to assist with keeping the build moving. I can say, this car would not be completed without their help, and all credit must go to Wayne and Lisa for the time, effort and first class fabrication work on this car.
“Once we had the car home again, Daren Chambers put in a lot of time completing the tin work, and anything else it took to complete the car.
Kade Brennan also spent countless hours in the shed over the years.”
With the car finally complete, the first litmus test was a recent private test day at Perth Motorplex.
Despite a few new car teething issues with the data logger, Brennan managed to check off most of the ANDRA licensing requirements on the day.
“If anyone that says autos are easy to drive, have not driven one of these!” quipped Brennan. “I suggest they strap themselves into a Space Shuttle first – there is a lot going on.”
“But we look forward to improving and competing in the Top Doorslammer series both locally and interstate.”
With the build now on track Brennan has plenty of people to thank helping him get there.
“A few people need to be recognised while the car was with Wayne for their assistance too; Troy Lane, Ant, Johnny and Daren Chambers – thank you.
“A huge thank you too as well, in no special order to; Bob Lush, Steve Lush, Clint, Kade Brennan, Jason Whitehouse, James Rowland, Brad Armour, Sabo, Gerry, Daniel and Lisa Gregorini. My apologies to anyone missed, but I am truly thankful to everyone involved in the build of this car.”
