Following the tragic passing of Sam Fenech at Willowbank Raceway earlier this month, the Atlantic Oil Top Fuel Slam will bring the drag racing community together to race in his honour.
“It is not often that you come across a guy who is just a genuinely good man, and that was Sam,” Jim Read Racing Crew Chief, Bruce Read, said.
“Our hearts continue to go out to Sam’s family as we all continue to grieve his passing.
“His loss will have an undeniable impact on our sport forever, and it hurts for us to have lost another great man.
“It will be our privilege to head to Sydney Dragway this Friday and Saturday as part of the Top Fuel Slam, an event which is now bringing the drag racing community together to race for Sam and celebrate this great man’s life and the love he had for our sport.”
In preparation for this weekend’s event, the team undertook test passes on the weekend which yielded positive results as they continue to work with the help of US drag racing tuning royalty, Jim ‘Jim O’ Oberhofer.
“In our testing on Saturday we ran a 3.81 second pass which was pretty good and very encouraging ahead of this week’s event,” Jim Read Racing driver, Phil Read, said.
“Together with our first round performance at Willowbank Raceway where we overcame clutch gremlins in qualifying to see our 3.982 second effort just pipped at the post by 82 thousandths of a second, we are feeling confident that things are moving in the right direction.
“Bruce and Jim O and myself have all been putting our heads together with the rest of our fantastic crew and we are really happy with the inroads we have made so far, and look forward to seeing what we can bring to the table in Sydney.
“It was at Sydney Dragway in January of 2022 that we took out our last A-Final victory, which was also the first for what was then the new Burson Auto Parts Australian Top Fuel Championship, so hopefully we can look to repeat that success at what is our home-track this weekend.”
The Atlantic Oils Top Fuel Slam will be held across Friday January 27 and Saturday January 28 at Sydney Dragway. For event information, go to www.topfuelchampionship.com.au or www.sydneydragway.com.au
