After a successful first championship in 2022, the Aeroflow Performance Products Funny Car Team haven’t been resting on their laurels. With new upgrades on some cars and a completely new car on deck, the team are ready to chase the points and the wins with the newly formed NDRC Nitro Funny Car Championship.
Team manager and Funny Car pilot Morice McMillan looks forward to the first round in Sydney, “It’s such a privilege to drive for Graeme, Wendy and the whole Aeroflow Team. To win the championship on the last pass at the last event of the season was just unreal,” said McMillin.
“To have both Cowin cars in a winner take all final, you just can’t ask for much more as a team.”
Although confident, stepping out of familiar machinery and in to a brand-new hot trod is always a daunting task, but the quality of the new package and some successful testing has McMillan feeling confident.
“Since the last season the boys have been working so hard to get this new Aeroflow Mustang built and let me tell you it’s one of the nicest funny cars in existence,” said McMillin.
“To run a brand-new car was nerve racking knowing how much time, effort and resources had gone in to it, but these Aeroflow boys have done an outstanding job as they always do and this thing was on pace on just its second pass.”
“Going in to this Sydney race with only a handful of runs on the new car without a doubt has me a little nervous – we know it’s fast but we pride ourselves on being consistent lap after lap – and as it stands we haven’t been able to run the car in a range of conditions so we might be racing a little bit off the cuff at this first event.”
When talking about stepping out of the original Aeroflow Funny Car – which will now be driven by Tommy Johnson Jr – McMillin has mixed feelings but acknowledges it’s about moving forward.
“Look, it’s a bittersweet moment, that car that we won in last year has a lot of sentimental value to myself and the team – it’s the OG Aeroflow Ninja as we called it! It will be strange to see someone else in that car but it’s also so cool that Tommy Johnson Jr is going to be that person!” said McMillin.
The first NDRC Nitro Funny Car round at Sydney Dragway will pose some challenges for McMillin and the team, however when asked about it he is confident the spectators and the sport will be the real winners here.
“Oh, it’s going to be tough, there is six very fast funny cars racing at Sydney Dragway, Friday Night qualifying is going to be awesome and then the racing on Saturday I reckon will be pretty entertaining. I cannot wait, there is really no way you can pick a winner!” he said.
The first round of the NDRC Nitro Funny Car championship kicks off at Sydney Dragway on October 27th and 28th 2023. See the 11,000hp, 500km/h flame throwing missiles compete side by side as well as Pro Alcohol, Pro Stock, Pro Mod and the Aeroflow Performance Sportsman Series Eastern Conference.
