This Friday and Saturday (January 26 and 27), PremiAir Racing will do all it can to open its 2024 in the best way possible – by taking home event-winning NDRC Christmas Tree trophies –at Sydney Dragway’s Australia Day Nationals.
The event will host not one but two rounds of the Australian Top Fuel Championship across Australia Day weekend at a track that has been a happy hunting ground for PremiAir Racing in the past.
The team’s most recent trips to the venue have seen PremiAir Racing lay claim to an event victory (January 2023) and a new track record (May 2022 – 3.768 seconds) on the way to a B-Final win, which elevated driver and Team Principal Peter Xiberras to second in the standings ahead of the 2022/2023 season finale.
Currently third in the championship standings after a B-Final win in front of a capacity crowd at the 2023/2024 season opener at Dragway at The Bend, the two-time champion is champing at the bit to make his next move in his latest title chase.
“This time last year, we took out the win in Sydney as part of what would become a late run at the title, going on to move into second place at the penultimate round,” Xiberras explains.
“While it was a strong season overall, second place in a title like this doesn’t come easy at all; we want to go further this season, of course.
“Naturally, we want to be up the front. We are third currently which isn’t bad, but we can do better, and we will be throwing everything at it this Friday and Saturday to advance up the order and ensure we are right in the hunt for our third title.
“With not one but two rounds of the championship to be held across the two days, it will be a real make-or-break point of the championship chase.
“If we can lock the title away this year, that will make three Top Fuel championships in four seasons, and that will certainly help make up for the sting of just missing out on the 2022/2023 title by only a small margin.”
While PremiAir Racing may be based in Queensland nowadays, for former New South Welshman Xiberras Sydney Dragway is an honourary home track, with plenty of local family and friends set to come out in support of the team this weekend.
“As a Sydney boy from way back, racing in Sydney is like racing at home even though we are based in Queensland now, and I can’t wait to put on a show in front of my family, friends, and our passionate local fan base,” Xiberras said.
