West Australian Nitro Funny Car stalwarts Allan and Cheryl Greene have announced their retirement from the sport effective immediately.
“What a wonderful journey it has been, but everything has to have an end and this is it! We have made the decision to retire from drag racing, effective immediately,” announced Allan and Cheryl Greene.
“The journey couldn’t have been possible without the wonderful crew that we have had over the years – too many to mention individually because we would forget someone. They and their families have been an integral part of our success. We have always tried to make it a ‘family deal’ as the commitment by the crew obviously cut into a lot of ‘family time’ with weeknights and weekends dedicated to the addiction called ‘drag racing’. Thank you each and every one of you for what you have done in helping us achieve our goals – 302mph (486 kph) was our main goal ahead of a 4 second pass – that wasn’t to be but we are satisfied with our achievements.”
“To our drivers Allan Dobson (Dobbo) who was integral in establishing the Greene Machine Nitro Funny Car with his fearless approach to racing along with his unbelievable skills, and to Fergie Donaldson and Matt Treasure for continuing the dream.”
“To Gary and the staff at the Kwinana Motorplex (and Ravenswood) – thank you for having the faith in us to get the job done. Without your support Nitro Funny Cars in Australia would have no doubt become an extinct animal.”
“To the fans who faithfully followed the Greene Machine, thank you so much for the support. To see you standing around hour after hour watching engine tear down, after engine tear down, was absolutely fantastic. And then to hear your cheers when coming back down the track was just so satisfying and humbling.”
“And more importantly to our sponsors and in particular to Chris Mills (CMP) and Graham Jones (Southside Engine Centre) who were with us from the start to finish, also Gary Millar (McMahon Haulage and TMG) and Damian Baker (Colonial Transport) – there were so many over the years, including Jason & Shane Smith (AllMine Signs) who did nearly all our signage. And one must not forget probably our first ever sponsor Greg Blechynden and the Good, Bad and Ugly restaurant.”
“I could go on but I will miss someone out and there were so many people who helped us in so many different ways all with the same goal in mind.”
“Lastly to our family who put up with us going our own way and many times putting racing before family, particularly at Christmas time when we raced on Boxing Day, we thank you for your patience and acceptance.”
“Thank you one and all for contributing to this journey which really had its roots 45 years ago with a grey motor Holden FJ at Fairbridge Farm.”
Drag News Australia wishes the Greene family all the best in their retirement and congratulate them to their long service in supporting the fan favourite Nitro Funny Car scene.
