The quickest screw blown black belt doorslammer in the world will be competing in National Drag Racing Championship Top Doorslammer with Paul Mouhayet is set to return in the driver’s seat.
After calling the tune-up shots, the former two-time Pro Slammer champion will now take the reigns of the John Ricca’s RPM Camaro at the East Coast Nationals for its Top Doorslammer debut. Ricca’s commitment to returning quarter-mile championship drag racing to Victoria, through the transformation of Heathcote Park Raceway into Victorian Motorsports Park, has taken priority over racing the Camaro, leaving Mouhayet chomping at the bit to get back behind the wheel once again.
The Moits Racing Mustang driver claimed two 400 Thunder Pro Slammer championships, setting national records along the way that have only recently been surpassed. Now, he faces a very different challenge with one of the most talked-about doorslammers in Australian drag racing.
The RPM Camaro has attracted worldwide attention since its return to Australia, smashing records in a number of different configurations.
Ricca’s Camaro blasted its way to a 5.406-second pass at 270.94mph (436.03km/h), setting the benchmark for the quickest Outlaw Pro Mod pass ever recorded in Australia, before switching to radial tyres and producing another jaw-dropping performance with a 3.49-second eighth-mile record.
Now the Camaro is about to embark on its biggest transformation yet.
Moving into Top Doorslammer requires a significant change to the car to meet the class regulations. The EFI system will make way for mechanical injection, while the C-Rotor supercharger running at 128 percent overdrive will be replaced by a D-Rotor running at 108 percent, with those changes just the beginning of the transformation.
How quickly the RPM team can adapt the combination and find a competitive tune-up will be one of the major storylines heading into the East Coast Nationals.
The timing couldn’t be more intriguing, with Top Doorslammer arriving at the event on the back of a spectacular Winternationals where the class effectively obliterated its own performance benchmarks.
