Cameron Turner went through one of the biggest crashes seen at Perth Motorplex just weeks ago but with the generous loan of a dragster he has been able to continue his quest for the Modified state championship.
Turner’s own dragster was broken in two following an impact with Brenton Baxter’s race car (below, images with thanks to Greg Field) and it appeared the 25 year old’s championship dreams were over but offers of help were not far away.
Queensland Drag Racing School operator Ken Lowe first offered the school’s dragster for the two remaining rounds of the championship if Turner was able to transport it, but costs proved prohibitive.
“Dad and I both licensed in Ken’s car and I drove the car at the Winternationals last year, however time and transport costs were going to be against us to get the car over from Queensland,” Turner said.
But then came a local opportunity with Norm Butler and son Sam offering up Sam’s dragster, with Sam not racing this season.
Despite being flat out setting up a new business, Turner found the time to get car’s set up for a crack at the championship.
“We’ve taken some parts off our crashed dragster such as the delay box to try and have a good crack at the last two rounds,” he said.
“When we had the offer of the Butlers’ dragster, we decided there and then we have a chance (at the championship) and we won’t give up without trying.”
As far as the team’s own car goes, Turner said it has been put to one side until the season is over.
“At present the engine and internals of the transmission and rear end may be all that are salvageable,” he said.
Unfortunately for Turner, his first event in the car last weekend saw a first round loss, while championship rival Sam Treasure made it to the semi finals, extending his points lead.
