Daniel Gregorini says his team will be aiming to avoid a repeat of the ignition problem that cost them a shot at a win recently in Queensland as the Australian Top Doorslammer Championship heads to Darwin this weekend.
Gregorini explained that a spark plug failure in the final round meant he wasn’t able to give winner John Zappia a real run for his money.
“A full overhaul of our ignition system will take place when we arrive in Darwin to assure us no more failures will occur,” he said.
A final round appearance was still a good reward for the team, who had to rebuild the 3000 horsepower Camaro after it hit the safety barriers in Sydney.
“All we wanted was a straight car after the crash but we achieved more than we set out to,” he said.
“Returning to Perth after the crash in Sydney wasn’t an option, so we worked on it for 24 hours straight in Sydney and then another 15 hours of work in Brisbane before the Winternationals.”
Gregorini has some experience at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway, which this weekend hosts its first ever championship round for the Top Doorslammer category.
“It’s a great atmosphere there and an awesome facility with great track staff and great people all round,” he said. “We have raced there once in our career with a personal best of a 6.17sec. in only three laps there so we can’t wait to tackle the next task at hand.”
