The Fast Series recently wrapped up at Perth Motorplex with Mick Fenton taking the championship victory for the Sportsman category in his Chevy II Nova.
Fenton said the weather was helpful in him earning the title, with predictable conditions allowing him to dial his car in perfectly, especially at the last event of the series.
“The weather was constant throughout the night, which makes the car run consistent,” he said. “At the last meet we ran we ran six pass, the car ran 9.094sec. on it’s best pass and the worst was a 9.102sec. With only eight thousandths of a second variation that is how you win races.”
Fenton won four out of the six events that comprised the championship, finishing on top by 100 points from Tim Spencer and Mark Reaney.
A fifth place finish in Super Sedan as part of the state championship was also a positive result for Fenton, who has plans to get a transporter and travel to the eastern states to have a go at some national level events.
But as far as changing a proven race car goes, he is holding off.
“We have a new motor to go in that should propel us into the mid 8sec. zone, that can go in next year,” he said. “We might change the graphics up a little bit but nothing other than that. We try to be consistent because that is what goes rounds on race day.
“(Super Sedan) is the toughest class for sure because we have to be so similar on each pass. When you are racing the top racers that’s all it comes down to, a few hundredths of a second.
“It’s a game of chance drag racing. When you’re on it, you’re on it, if you’re not, you’re not.”
