Angela Dow experienced a scary transmission failure as she crossed the finish line in her Holden Torana during qualifying for the City of Ipswich Winternationals.
A cloud of smoke obscured the car from the start line at the fast end of the run and news came through that she had reached the sand trap.
However according to sister Vanessa Dow via Facebook, Angela had her hands full in the braking area and she was full of praise for how her sibling handled the incident.
The gearbox exploded beside Angela, tearing away the brake and accelerator pedals along with large chunks of the cab. The windscreen was also blown out and just to add to the difficulty level there was oil under the tyres.
Despite this Angela guided the car on a straight line to the sand trap and was able to extricate herself from the car quickly.
The violence of the transmission failure was such that Angela’s foot was fractured in three places, with a trip to hospital to get fixed up.
