The Dubbo City Car Club has been fighting for a drag strip in the area for 15 years now, as NSW continues to suffer from having no dedicated regional drag racing facility – that fact however could change soon if DCCC receive the funding they need to realise their dream plans.
The DCCC have received the boost they have been looking for from Dubbo Regional Council after receiving development approval to build their proposed Dubbo Drag Strip on land 5km out of Brockelhurst well clear of residential areas.
Once completed the DCCC promise a world-class eighth mile drag strip, and the first zero-emissions facility in the world.
ANDRA’s General Manager Brett Stevens was on site to discuss the drag strip’s plans, welcoming the push to make Dubbo’s the world’s first zero-emissions drag strip, through the use of solar panels and potentially wind energy.
“Drag racing’s emissions weren’t as high as other motor sports,” he said. “But there’s a perception, and anything that we can do to alleviate that perception is great.”
The DCCC now need an investment of between $4 million and $5 million to get the initial stage of the project built, and are calling on state and federal governments to invest in the facility that would bring a economy boom to the area.
“It’s going to create a great boon for the Dubbo community because those guys have to stay somewhere, they have fuel somewhere, they have to eat somewhere,” said Project Manager Michael Cleary.
“The amount of money it could inject into the community is phenomenal and also we will eventually be on the ANDRA Summit Drag Racing Circuit, so that essentially means that we’ll have guys from all over Australia and around the world coming to race here eventually.”
The drag strip would be completed within 12 months of acquiring the necessary funding.
The DCCC currently race at an airstrip in Bodangora Wellington which is severely under-equipped for the needs of racers in this day.
With potential other regional NSW areas closing in on permanent facilities of their own, NSW drag racing could witness a huge injection of racing in the heartland of the state in the near future.
