The Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car series made its first visit to Steel City Raceway in Whyalla, South Australia and the 4000 horsepower nitro coupes put on an amazing show for the packed venue.
The massive crowd enjoyed the perfect conditions just as much as the racers, with the Steel City Raceway track presented impeccably well, under clear skies and a light breeze. While night time conditions proved tricky, there were still plenty of nitro flames for the crowd to enjoy.
After the first two rounds of side-by-side action, the last race two runs of the night would decide the winner for the event with Justin Walshe in Terminator, Morice McMillin driving One Bad Kiwi and Shane Olive’s Red Devil all on the maximum six points heading into the final round.
Red Devil and Shane Olive faced Anthony Begley’s LA Hooker in the penultimate round of the night and the red ’57 Chev made a thundering pass to take the win. The action didn’t stop there however, the car couldn’t make the exit and went deep into the sand. Olive was uninjured and it meant the Sydney-sider had a nervous wait as he watched McMillin and Walshe square up for the final run of the night.
“Once I knew the car wasn’t too bad, I had over to the side of the track to watch the final pass of the night,” explained Olive.
The final pass saw McMillin take a hard-fought win over Walshe. The time for One Bad Kiwi was not quite as fast as Olive’s however, meaning McMillin took the runner-up spot with Walshe rounding out the podium.
Olive continued, “We had a great night, it was a bit tricky adapting to the track conditions but all the teams did a awesome job.”
“I feel a bit down that the car suffered a bit of damage but I’m proud of my crew and the whole Aeroflow series to be honest, we did everything we could to put on a great show and I think the crowd appreciated that!”
Runner-up McMillin added, “Congratulations to Shane-O on the win, he had his hands full!”
“I want to thank my crew, as well as all of the team from Steel City Raceway – the entire committee did such a great job promoting this race meeting, it was great to with such a good group of people.”
Walshe concluded “We are getting there with this new car, my guys have been working away to find the sweet spot and we are getting close!”
The next event for the Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Cars will be May 12 at Brisbane’s Willowbank Raceway.
