Twenty-three years ago Justin Simpson bought a Monaro HG as a roller to run in SS/A. Today, he is well entrenched in Australia’s drag racing industry as a leading tuner working with an array of drivers and teams.
Team Bray Racing is pleased to have Simpson working with them on Ben Bray’s Gulf Western Oil-supported Toyota Solara.
Simpson, who today doesn’t get as much seat time in his own car due to making sure his customers come first was involved some 14 years ago with TBR. He assisted Ben get his 1200 Dato ute going in the very early stages of the sport compact seen.
“It was great fun getting the ute on the track and I have always had a great friendship with Ben and Victor, I have always been pleased to try and help if asked at any stage,” Simpson explained.
“Hopefully we can keep moving forward with the program and win the Factory Xtreme class at the upcoming Brisbane Jamboree, maybe we can even run into the low sixes.
“With only a handful of passes completed, we are already the fastest 1FZ in Australia, have won at the Winternationals and were runner-up at the Sydney Jamboree – with that result coming with zero passes completed at the time on what was a brand-new combination.
“Knowing that Ben and I have achieved all that in such a short space of time is really rewarding and I am excited about what will come next.”
When he isn’t working with Team Bray Racing, Simpson is helping racers all across the country through his business, Horse Power Solutions. He has even become friends with ‘Doc’ of Street Outlaws fame and has helped him with his data and tuning on occasion.
“Horse Power Solutions is based around building and tuning race cars. I am lucky enough to work with hundreds of cars for the street and for racing each year,” Simpson explained.
“Aside from installing all the parts needed to build race engines, I also offer track support and often find myself with anywhere between five and 20 cars at the race track at any one time.
“Alongside Scott Harker I also run the Kenda Drag Radial Series which we are pleased to report is the fastest growing class in Australian drag racing.
“When I am not busy with work or promoting our Radial series which is a rare occasion I am currently building a brand new 615 cube EFI dry nitrous motor. I also will be returning to the USA sometime soon to tick some more boxes in the racing scene over there.– I attended last year and it was really great – it is a pretty exciting time!”
After 20-plus years in the industry, Simpson is showing no signs of losing his passion.
“Chasing the perfect pass and helping racers achieve their goals keeps me coming back,” Simpson said.
“The constant learning curve of data and power management and the variety of constant changes we are dealing with thanks to developing power plans and technologies keeps us all on our toes too!”
