A small Aussie invasion has headed to South Georgia Motorsport Park in the USA for this weekend’s No Mercy 9 – the biggest radial race in the world.
No Mercy, and its spring cousin Lights Out, have become must-see events for radial racers and this year three Australian teams will be represented.
Queensland’s Wade Wagstaff has sent his 57 Chev to compete, hoping for his first three second time slip. Wagstaff had a nervous wait for his car to be released from customs after being caught up in the container SNAFU that also affected Aussie Drag Weekers, but is now primed and ready to go. The Noonan Hemi-powered Chev tested at Darlington ahead of the event, recording a best of 4.19 (check out the video below). Wagstaff will be competing in Radial vs the World.
Hoping to join Wagstaff in the threes will be Sydney’s Jeremy ‘Jet’ Martin and his wild VB Commodore. Martin recently made Australian drag racing headlines by winning the $50k Grudge Kings event in Sydney. As the only Australian-made car on the property, we expect Martin to get a few strange looks when he rolls the four door on to the track.
Harry Haig was a late addition with his Steve-o Chevelle, more well known from the Drag Week trail. Haig has just completed another Drag Week, where he finished second in the Super Street Big Block Power Adder class. Haig got a personal invite to come and play at No Mercy 9, getting the opportunity to tick a big item off his bucket list.
And finally Victoria’s Jarrod Wood, the first man to run a three second pass on radials in Australia over the eighth mile, will be competing in Kevin Mullins and Bill Schurr’s X275 Jeep SRT, which runs a rather bad ass 440ci turbo Hemi. Wood bought Mullins’ Mustang last year and it looks like it has resulted in the unique opportunity to go racing in the USA.
We’ll have more updates across the week on how the Aussies fare.
