Mark Sheehan’s Top Fuel dragster may be a rare sight but when it does come out to race it means business.
Sheehan is looking forward to the ANDRA Pro Series Top Fuel event this weekend at Perth Motorplex and with the assistance of USA crew chief John Smith is hoping to set new performance benchmarks.
“I’d like to see the car into the 4.60sec. area, I don’t think that is out of the question,” he said. “I won’t say the ‘fifty’ word, but I definitely expect sixties.”
When Sheehan last raced his dragster it was a brand new car yet still achieved some consistent and strong passes.
“This season it’s time to take it to the next level,” he said. “We had data logger problems last season and weren’t getting any information on critical passes so we had to be a bit cautious.
“Now we’ve got some new bits so we can try and get some consistency and keep up with the likes of Andrew Cowin.”
The team is testing today to get Sheehan used to driving the dragster again after an almost 12 month lay off.
“We’re testing so everyone can get back into the groove, from my point of view I haven’t been in the car in what feels like ages so I need to do some laps,” he said. “John (Smith) knows how serioues I am about going fast and he is steering me in the right direction.”
Top Fuel qualifying will be held from 6pm Friday night, with racing from 6pm Saturday.
