We will see a tough new look for David Whitmore post-COVID racing break when he rocks back up to Sydney Dragway.
Gone is the blown black VL Commodore which has seen a couple of wild moments.
In its place is an iconic piece of American muscle, a 1966 Chevy Nova that was formerly run by Brett Balfour in aspirated form. However Whitmore has given it a supercharger, and it looks tough as hell.
“She’s a ’66 Nova, full chassis, Pat Bennett race car imported from the States,” said Whitmore.
The car will run a similar set up to the VL which has served Whitmore well in Top Sportsman.
“The engine is basically the same as it was in the VL – a 400ci small block freshened with a new hat and larger pipes,” he said.
“We only run low boost to keep it an affordable race car, which is a word not often used in drag racing, but the combination always worked so well in the Commodore – so we’ve left it alone.
“The main aim is to have a seven-second drag car that comes out and does it lap after lap. In the VL the quickest we ever ran was 8.0, but we’ve been super consistent with no breakdowns. Grant from Grant’s Performance looks after the car for us, and in the few years of racing the VL it’s been the most fun I’ve ever had.”
