A classic debut coming for second generation Costello

Second generation racer Brendan Costello will be making his drag racing debut with a classic Australian icon.

With the general trend toward later model machinery in the drag racing world, particularly with younger age groups, 21-year-old Costello will buck the trend when he debuts on the Sydney Dragway black top with a Holden Australiana classic.

“The car is a 1961 EK Holden, running a 406ci Chevy with a 2-speed Powerglide, the rear-end is a nine inch with 35 spline axles and a four link. The doors are all fibreglass, same with the boot and front clip, and the car was built by Rod Andrews who also raced it back in the day,” said Costello.

The car is currently residing at Profection with Kit Hunter getting some final adjustments and a dyno tune up, where it punched out 550 ponies. Costello hopes to have the car on track early in the new year.

Brendan is a second generation racer from the national capital. His dad Chris campaigned a Mk 2 Cortina for many years, and Brendan draws on him and a posse of Canberran racing identities as inspiration for his desire to race himself.

“I can’t wait, as this has always been a dream of mine,” said Costello.

“The motivation behind it is that my dad has always raced, he had a Mk2 back in the day and growing up watching him race was unreal. He was my hero and being around drag racing is all I know.

“Watching and idolising people likes Dougie Stewart, Mick Sutton, Chad Taylor, Rick Chilton, Peter Cashin growing up, and being around them was unreal. And I have been lucky enough to crew for the likes of Alf Sciacca Jr, Mick Sutton, and Sean Ricketson. Dad has really given me the big push to get this car and start racing, I can’t wait to get out there and live my dream, and also mix it with the Super Sedan racers.”
