The Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship completed a historic weekend at Fuchs South Coast Raceway in Portland on Sunday with Victorian Craig Geddes’ win in Super Comp sitting atop the list of highlights.
Geddes defeated fellow Victorian Darren Parker in a close final race, with Geddes edging his opponent by just 0.012 of a second.
Geddes said the win was very special to him as he was able to demonstrate his racing prowess in front of family and friends for the first time since the last ANDRA championship round in Victoria in 2001.
“We were very keen to win this one,” he said. “To win in my home state is fantastic, it has been a long time coming. It’s the pinnacle of the sport to be able to race in front of your close friends and family.
“The track is very impressive and I take my hat off to the guys who run the show here. We were very pleased to have the car running well and getting some championship points in the bank.”
Geddes also top qualified and reset both the time and speed national records for his class in a complete domination of the event.
Meanwhile it was Queensland’s Luke Marsden emerging victorious in Supercharged Outlaws, taking his Funny Car to the winner’s circle over Doina Day.
Marsden is one of the more well travelled racers in the Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship and said he didn’t want to miss the chance to be part of the historic round, the first run over an eighth mile (201 metre) distance.
“It’s an awesome, friendly environment; there are a lot of people here who love what they do and for a regional track I haven’t seen any better racing or facility,” he said. “I’m a fan of the eighth mile format, any time we can go racing and take it out to more people it’s a plus for everyone.
“We’ve been struggling for consistency with the clutch in the car, we calmed it down a little bit and it now seems to be working. We’re going to travel to Adelaide and Perth next and then coming back for the Easter bash in Roma, Queensland.”
Other winners on the day included Jason Salmon (Competition Bike), Kenny Stewart (Modified), Brett Mathew (Super Sedan), Tony Frost (Modified Bike), Scott Cleary (Super Street), Erin Koukides (Junior Dragster) and Kym Oberauer (Super Gas).
