The Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship will see a new format used this weekend at Perth Motorplex for the four-wheeled Group Two categories.
Instead of the standard mix of Competition, Super Stock and Super Compact, the brackets will be divided into Top Comp (blown classes from Competition) and Super Comp (naturally aspirated classes from competition plus Super Stock and Super Compact).
Top Comp will also be using a three round format similar to that being used for Top Fuel and Top Fuel Motorcycle at the event, although with only one championship round being held.
The three round format is made up of a compulsory qualifying session, an elimination round and then two finals made up of the four racers who won and went furthest under their index in the elimination round.
Super Comp will retain the traditional elimination format.
The format of the two brackets is in line with what is run at Perth Motorplex track championship events.
ANDRA competition manager Brett Stevens said there was a request from the management of Perth Motorplex in the middle of last year when the calendar was being set to trial the format for this event.
“The board of ANDRA Ltd. decided that the format was worth trialling for this event only at this stage,” he said, “What this does is get some of the most exciting sportsman racing vehicles in front of the crowd multiple times on race day.
“This event is a trial only, after this event an analysis will be performed by ANDRA with feedback from racers and Perth Motorplex management before any recommendations or decisions on the continued use of this format for Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship events. There is currently no plan to use at any further Aeroflow Championship events.”
