Bandit ready to steal the Nitro Up North title

Josh Leahy is prepared to return to winning form at this Friday night’s Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car showdown in Darwin.

Leahy admitted he felt a little rusty when he returned to the car in April in Sydney, having not raced the 400kmh ‘Bandit’ in over a year.

“Everyone went quick and fast, and I think I need to catch up,” he said.

“After 12 months of not racing, it was great to be back in the seat racing in front of a crowd and I can’t wait to do it again at Hidden Valley.”

In particular, Leahy has his sights set on series manager Morice McMillin (‘One Bad Kiwi’) and his father Greg (‘Stormtrooper’).

“If I win against either, it’s bragging rights in the pit over the guy who tunes your car or my childhood hero,” he said.

The addition of live TV to the event brings added pressure to perform, but Leahy is confident he can find the form he needs to leave Darwin with the famed Rocket trophy.

“I know we all want to showcase the best of what this series has to offer with side-by-side nitro action,” he said. “Anytime we go to a race event we are hungry for a spot on the podium. I’ll be focusing on being consistent and wrestling the car all the way to the finish line.”

There is also some leftover business for Leahy in Darwin. He felt like he was unlucky not to do better last time the series was in town.

“We ran a meeting best ET of 5.58 and if I had repeated that through the event we could’ve ended the night on the podium or with a win.”

Nitro Up North featuring the Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Cars is this Friday night live of Foxsports/Kayo and 7Plus from 7pm EST.
