Begley to make Top Fuel debut

Western Australia will have three representatives competing in Top Fuel at the Winternationals in just over two weeks with Anthony Begley set to drive in drag racing’s premier category for the first time.

Begley is no stranger to nitro power, having raced Funny Cars for several years for Queensland team owner Rod Bailey and more recently as part of drag racing legend Graeme Cowin’s Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car Series.

Begley said the decision to get a dragster was part of working with Bailey to get more lap time and the chassis formerly belonged to Damien Harris and Paul Shackleton, who took it to within just two points of the national championship back in 2012.

“Rod (and the team) have been working around the clock trying to get the car ready,” he said. “We got the car complete less motor and clutch.”

Begley is looking forward to getting his first runs in the car at the Winternationals, held at Willowbank Raceway.

“I’m going to Benaraby, Queensland this weekend to drive Graeme Cowin’s new Funny Car ‘Stormtrooper’, then back to Perth, and the following weekend I will go over to Queensland again for some performance testing at the Winternationals warm up,” he said. “Then we head to the Winternationals where we hopefully will be competitive.”
