Benny Stevens delivered some quick performances during the Nitro Harley Challenge as part of the 2019 All Bike Drags at Queensland’s Benaraby Dragway last weekend.
Stevens’ quickest pass of the day was a 4.426 at 166.15mph for the eighth mile, not too far from his best time for the distance.
“We were stoked to smash out the 4.42 on our last run of the day,” Stevens said. “This is still a new bike but it performed well. It was also a thrill and an honour to line up against my uncle Kim for the first time ever. That one will go into the history books for me.
“Thank you to all the fans who turned out to see the first Nitro Harley Challenge. We look forward to bringing them many more in the future!”
The Stevens family competed in a best of three match race over the day, as they turned on big burnouts and gave North Queensland a nitro show to remember.
Stevens gave credit to the track crew at Benaraby Dragway who produced the quality surface that yielded the quick time and the team behind the 2019 All Bike Drags.
“All bike events are tricky to prep for because you don’t have the same amount of rubber going on to the groove as when you have cars running, yet the track prep guys worked really hard and gave us the best surface possible – one that would have held six second times for the quarter mile,” he said.
“A huge thanks to Viv and the Yank for their support in helping get the All Bikes show off the ground.”
Before the event, Stevens and his team toured the region and put the bikes on display to generate interest in the event, which allowed him to meet with many incredible people.
“We drew quite the following, from displaying at Harley-Davidson dealerships to showing off in the local pubs,” he said. “One of the best parts of the week was getting to meet many other amputees, from old blokes to young kids. It’s all about showing them that life is still there for the taking!”
Stevens is not finished with North Queensland yet, as he plans to head to another drag strip in just a few weeks.
“For anyone who really enjoyed the show and would like to see it again, or anyone who missed it, we will have both bikes running at Palmyra Dragway on September 7 in a Top Fuel Motorcycle exhibition,” he said. “There’s nothing like nitro, and we hope to see even more people at Palmyra!”
