Ipswich City Council has taken another important step in its plan to revitalise the Ipswich Motorsport Precinct, signing on as naming rights sponsor for the 2016 Winternationals.
Under the agreement the 2016 event will be presented by the City of Ipswich, bringing national and international exposure for the city.
Economic Development, Tourism and Digital City Committee Chairman, Mayor Paul Pisasale, said the move was part of council’s continuing strategy to establish the Ipswich Motorsport Precinct as Queensland’s leading motorsport facility.
“We are progressing with our Ipswich Motorsport Precinct master plan to reinvigorate motorsport in Ipswich,” Cr Pisasale said.
“This is about harnessing the opportunities presented through the motorsport industry to create jobs for Ipswich and grow our local tourism industry.
“The motorsport industry output in Australia is $2.7 billion and by redeveloping the Ipswich Motorsport Precinct as Queensland’s leading motorsport facility we can make sure Ipswich gets a bigger slice of the action.
“We’re very grateful for the opportunity to come on board as naming rights sponsor of the Winternationals, which is a truly iconic event and the largest championship drag racing event held outside of North America.
“It will draw 400 racers and an estimated 30,000 spectators from across the nation while also helping to showcase Ipswich to Australia and the world.”
Paul Casos, vice-president of Willowbank Raceway, thanked the council for its support.
“When the opportunity became available for a new naming rights sponsor, the Ipswich City Council showed tremendous initiative in securing the sponsorship on behalf of the city, continuing to demonstrate their dedication to the Ipswich Motorsport Precinct, and their intention to make Ipswich the motorsport capital of Australia,” Mr Casos said.
“We are excited to be able to extend our relationship with the Ipswich City Council, and look forward to working together to bring Ipswich a successful Winternationals.”
The City of Ipswich Winternationals will be held from 9 to 12 June.
