Darren Morgan Racing claimed victory on Saturday winning Santo’s Summer Thunder in Sydney. The four-time Australian Top Fuel Champion took wins over American driver Dom Lagana, Mark Mariani and Wayne Newby in a three round format with a total of nine cars competing.
Winners were decided by a points system based on race wins and elapsed time rankings with the overall event winner determined by the final race pairing.
“The competition was awesome with tuners and drivers from America that are some of the best in world,” Morgan said.
“It was fantastic to have partipated in the largest amount of competitive Top Fuel passes ever in Australia.”
Morgan took the win after defeating American Dom Lagana in round one with a 4.81 second run at 308mph against a 5.34 at 174mph. Round two saw Morgan take the win against Mark Mariani with a 4.75 second run at 319mph against a 5.07 at 258mph. Morgan’s AEG Powertools Top Fuel Dragster then took the win in the final with a 4.74 second run at 272mph against Wayne Newby’s 6.35 at 139mph.
“We are excited about the direction the new car is going, running continuously four second runs in tough conditions,” Morgan said. “It was great to take home the win in front of the big Sydney crowd.”
“My team did an awesome job, I am really proud of them all.”
Morgan is now only seven points behind 400 Thunder points leader Wayne Newby.
Fans had the opportunity to meet their idols at the AEG Powertools Hour-of-Power autograph session with AEG Powertools product giveaways and t-shirt cannon.
“It was exciting to see the huge crowds and it was great to have AEG Powertools and Bunnings at the event,” Morgan said.
Morgan has been busy on the road, travelling to three Bunnings events over the past two weeks. Bunnings stores in Rocklea, Blacktown and Bankstown got to feel the power of Morgan’s 10,000 horsepower dragster with three start-ups at each event.
DMR are now on the way to Melbourne ahead of The Nationals at Calder Park this weekend.
“We are really looking forward to racing in front of our Victorian fans,” Morgan said.
Morgan will be competing on Saturday and Sunday. Top Fuel is scheduled to run 6.18pm on Saturday and 1.30pm and 5.10pm on Sunday.
