US racing star Frankie Taylor has stormed his way to the Pro Slammer victory for Team Bray Racing and Gulf Western Oil during this weekend’s AC Delco East Coast Thunder Nationals.
The Texan, formerly the world’s quickest and fastest blown Doorslammer driver over the quarter mile, took on and defeated Paul Mouhayet in the final with a 5.938 second at 229.04 MPH effort. Earlier in the night, he had faced Mark Belleri in the semi-final (5.833s/400.77kms v 5.988s/396.24kmh), top qualifier Scott Maclean (round two) and Michelle Davies in (round one)
“We had a pretty intense run into eliminations – I ended up in the eighth spot after running a 6.202s with a pedal and then a 5.90s pass – however, I lost a core plug during that run and damaged the engine,” Taylor explained.
“We had a very late night and early morning undertaking an engine change as a result, but we powered through and fronted up for eliminations full of beans.
“There was a rain delay for racing, so we didn’t get out until 2.30pm, and our first round wasn’t so pretty due to tire shake but we got it done with a 6.283 @217.60MPH
“From there we ran well all the way through to the finals and enjoyed a great race in the final against Paul Mouhayet.
“I came here to do a good job for Team Bray Racing and Gulf Western Oil, and for the big man Victor Bray himself.
“I am very pleased that I have been able to break-through for a win for the team in my first event racing for them here in Australia. It’s been a great weekend!”
For TBR’s Ben Bray, it wasn’t such a great weekend out at the Sydney Dragway facility. A broken blower belt just after he accepted the green light in round two saw him out of the running following a difficult day of qualifying. He had earlier faced and beat Geoff Gradden in round one with a 5.723s run at 253.14MPH
“In the first qualifier we ran a 6.076-second pass and it looked like we might have a good night ahead, but you know how drag racing can go sometimes, it turned from pretty good to bad, unfortunately!” Ben lamented.
“We lost a core plug in the oil gallery in the second qualifier. With no oil pressure on start-up, I had to shut the car down.
“We replaced the plug and were good to go for the third and final qualifier. Unfortunately, I spun the tires at about the 60-foot race distance and had to get off it early.
“I still made the field however and we set to work improving our package. However, round two would be as far as we would go with a broken blower belt – sometimes you just can’t catch a break!
“While things didn’t go the way we wanted for my Gulf Western Oil Pro Slammer, it was still a great weekend for TBR with Frankie Taylor bringing home the event win!”
