For 50 years, the Winternationals have been the definitive Australian Drag Racing event – the largest of its type anywhere in the world outside of North America, to give you an idea of the scale – and for 30 of those years, the Winternationals have called Willowbank Raceway home.
Less than 20 minutes’ drive from the burgeoning Ipswich CBD, Willowbank Raceway is the state’s home of Drag Racing, and one of the finest Drag Racing facilities in the country – a track revered by local and interstate racers alike, with over 12 major racing events throughout the calendar year drawing racers from all over Queensland, and Australia.
To commemorate the special role the Winternationals plays in the greater Ipswich region, Ipswich City Council have formalised their support of the event by signing on to the landmark Gulf Western Oils 50th Winternationals as Presenting Partners.
It continues a strong relationship between the Council and Willowbank Raceway, with Mayor Paul Pisasale highlighting the integral role the Winternationals plays within the region, boosting awareness and driving important economic benefits through tourism investment as thousands of Drag Racing fans from Australia and all over the globe descend on the area for four days of Drag Racing nirvana.
“Ipswich City Council has long been a proud supporter of the Winternationals, which is one of the premier events on our city’s calendar each year,” begins Mayor Pisasale. “It draws thousands of people to our region each year and provides an important boost to the Ipswich tourism industry.”
Both the Winternationals event and Willowbank Raceway are both billed as two of the most family-friendly motorsport environments on the calendar, with Willowbank working hard to make the event accessible to families through great value ticket pricing, including free entry for children 13-years and under.
“This is a tremendous family-friendly event which takes Ipswich not just nationally but to the world,” adds Mayor Pisasale of the importance of making the Winternationals accessible to the region’s young families and Drag Racing enthusiasts, whilst also acknowledging the tremendous amount of international media the event attracts, boosting the profile of tourism in the area.
“It is an absolute credit to the organisers, competitors, fans and volunteers that this event is now in its 50th year and I congratulate all who help to make it the success that it is,” adds Mayor Pisasale in closing.
As Queensland’s premier motorsport facility, Willowbank Raceway will proudly host the City of Ipswich presents Gulf Western Oils 50th Winternationals from June 8th – 11th, 2017. The event attracts race teams from all over the country, and some of the world’s best driver’s, in the action-packed final to the 400 Thunder Championship. The event includes a field of over 400 vehicles across a range of categories, and will be headlined by the monstrous 10,000hp flame-throwing Top Fuelers racing under lights.
