In 2016, Aussie racing fans were treated to the sight and sound of the most powerful rotary engine to ever fly down the quarter mile in Mazda’s home country of Japan.

And in just over a week that same Mazda RX-7, albeit with a new look and some brand-new Garrett turbocharged horsepower, will fire up and race here in Australia once more as Makoto Watanabe and his incredible rotary machine takes on the best Australia has to offer at Jamboree!

Before coming to Australia to race, the best pass Makoto had made in his RX-7 was 7.6 seconds. But with the benefit of some great racing conditions and a track that is far better than the runways he’s used to at home in Japan, that number quickly dropped in to the 7.40s. The team aren’t resting on their performances though, with Makoto outlining some changes for this year’s Aussie attack.

“This year we have changed the look of the car, we’ve changed tyre compound, and we’ve changed the turbocharger from a GT-4718R to a new GTX-4718R. We’ve also increased the boost and we are aiming to run a 7.2-second pass,” he said.

With a bags of extra horsepower on board and a solid week of testing prior to the event, Makoto’s incredible RX-7 is going to be one to watch!
