Last round winner Ben Bray to lead Slamfest Series to Mackay

Team Bray Racing’s Ben Bray will be one to watch when the final round of the 2013 Slamfest Series hits Mackay’s Palmyra Raceway on Saturday 13 July.

Not only is the 29 year old from Kallangur the last-round winner, he also holds the Mackay elapsed time (5.85s) and speed (252mph)track records courtesy of his 2007 trip down the facilities’ quarter-mile distance in his Top Alcohol funny car.

Next weekend, he will be at the wheel of his Sidchrome Top Doorslammer, taking on seven other 3,5000 horsepower ‘doored’ beasts across the eighth-mile in what is the final round of the 2013 Series.

Adding to his competitive inspiration will be the fact that he is currently tied for third in the championship points with none other but his father, Victor Bray.

“After taking the event win at Gladstone’s Benaraby Raceway last week I am absolutely pumped to get to Mackay,” said Ben Bray.

“During last year’s two-round North Queensland leg of the Series, I took an event win and a semi-final lose to my dad, this time around I already have the event win under my belt so I am going to be doing everything I can to make sure I come out ahead of good old dad when it comes to those championship points – those would make some sweet workshop bragging rights that is for sure!

“Seriously though, the entire Slamfest Series field is very excited about getting on track at Palmyra. It will be the first time the Series has visited the track, and Dad and I haven’t raced there in Doorslammer since 2006 at the Castrol EDGE Night of Thunder, so I am definitely keen to show the fans some Top Doorslammer fun on 13 July.”

Victor Bray said he wasn’t quite ready to hand over the father v son bragging rights for the Series just yet.

“A lot can happen in a race meeting, so we will just wait and see what happens shall we,” laughed Victor Bray.

“The amazing crowd support we enjoyed in Gladstone last weekend is still ringing in my ears, so I am really looking forward to heading to Mackay where I am assured the locals are already getting right behind the Series and are itching to see their first ever Slamfest Series showdown.

“They will also have the chance to meet Ben and I ahead of race day on Thursday 11 July from 2.00pm at McGinns Engineering Supplies where we will be giving away tickets and signing autographs– so hopefully we can have the chance to meet some of the fans there as well.

“I know the crew at Mackay have been working very hard to make improvements when they can between rain seasons, and I applaud their hard work – I can’t wait to get on track and see how it is coming along!”

Now entering its fourth year, the Slamfest Series sees Top Doorslammer racers from around the country competing across the eighth-mile distance at Australia’s regional tracks. The Brays will be joined on-track in the Top Doorslammer field next weekend by 2012 Slamfest Series champion and Series co-owner Peter Kapiris as well as John Zappia, Gary Phillips, Russ Pavey, Murray O’Connor and Grant O’Rourke.

Before the cars get on track, race fans can head on down to McGinns Engineering Supplies (22 – 26 Wellington Street, Mackay, see for more information) on Thursday 11 July from 2.00pm for the chance to win double ‘pit lane’ passes to the final round of the Slamfest Series and the opportunity to meet Victor and Ben Bray.

Come Saturday 13 July, the gates will open at 8.00am with qualifying from 10.00am and racing from 1.00pm.  Children aged 12 years and under gain free entry when accompanied by an adult while those aged 13 to 16 years (as well as concession holders) can purchase tickets for just $20.00. Adult passes are available for $35.00 while family passes (2 adults and 2 kids) are available for just $70.00.  For more information, please visit or
