After a record smashing Easter weekend at the Santos Cranes Super 3 Extreme Drag Race at Willowbank, where Matheson re-wrote history with a 241.80 mph (389.13 kph), 6.04 ET, Matheson is fired up to improve his performance at the upcoming Sydney Dragway Nitro Championships in early May.
Matheson, multiple ANDRA Pro-Series Top Fuel Motorcycle Champion and his Nitro Voodoo Team are eager to improve on their current Sydney Track Record of 6.09, when they converge on Sydney 3-5 May 2013.
Matheson has experienced some huge highs and tasted the bitter lows of Sydney.
Matheson said. “We have won the Nitro’s on a number of occasions and broken our own track record last time we competed at Sydney Dragway.“
“On the flip side, I crashed heavily in Sydney at only my second race meeting on the Fuel Bike, back in 2010. We split an oil line at the finish line at 370 kph, which sent me into the wall, then I simply ran out of track whilst trying to gather the bike up, crashing heavily into the sand pit.”
“The Team and one of our sponsors Brian Antunovich from RedLine Oil, did an all nighter to fix the machine to allow me to race the next day, only to lose in the second round to Kim Stevens on his Nitro Harley.” he continued.
“We have run big MPH and low ET and enjoy the Sydney crowds, it will be a huge weekend, we have prepared the bike in readiness for the event and have plenty of spares on board to meet the challenge ahead of the Team.“
After running solid numbers at the Santo’s Cranes Super 3 Extreme show, which was an exhibition, we now need to re-focus on the Championship points chase and close the points gap on rival Chris Porter.
“Porter and the Bad Bones Racing Team will be harder than usual to race, being Chris’ home track and the huge support he has in Sydney, from not only fans, but his major sponsor Fraser Motorcycles. We expect a big turn up, especially with Sydney Dragway running a headline act including Top Fuel, Nitro Funny Cars, ProStock Bike, along with the fastest Nitro Bikes in Australia.” Matheson said.
“The win we enjoyed at Adelaide International Raceway is history, as was our performance at Willowbank. We are focused on improving our performances at the Nitro’s and are chasing not only Championship points, but a new PB and a new Track Record.“
Matheson went on to say he was hoping to see a big turn out from the Top Bike Riders at the Nitro’s. Phil Parker ran a stout PB at Adelaide and will be right up in the mix. Porter, Championship leader, has the home track advantage. Graeme Morrell and hopefully Dennis Grant from South Australia. The Western Australian contingent of Drew, Burnett and Crawford, Neville Smith from Brisbane and hopefully a couple of the other Eastern State riders support the bracket and come out to race, including Sydney local, Leonard Azzopardi, who has proven to be front runner at Sydney Dragway in the past.
Matheson said he is looking forward to a full field of 8 Top Fuel Motorcycles at the Nitros, which will be great for the Top Fuel Motorcycle bracket and will set the tone for the upcoming Winternationals in June.
“It would be sensational to see an oversubscribed field at the Winters and all the Fuel Bike Teams and fans alike would welcome the rumoured return of Kiwi, Athol Williams and former Champion, White Knight, Jay Upton.“ he concluded.
