Despite a series of challenges thrown her way, Jodie Mellitt became the first woman to win the West Australian Supercharged Outlaws Championship after her latest victory just under a fortnight ago at Perth Motorplex.

Mellitt said that mechanical damage to her dragster from the Westernationals earlier in March almost threatened their push for the title.

“After the carnage we received at the Westernationals with a damaged transmission and differential, we thought we would take it easy in qualifying,” she said. “We ran a 7.15sec. first pass off the trailer so I put on my big girl pants and put some revs in for the launch in the second session.

“This time the launch spun the tyres and as I got off the throttle the car threw me left then right, I was heading for the wall and I think my lucky stars I didn’t hit it, it was damn close though.”

Racing thankfully proceeded more to script, with a win over Jon Ferguson’s Chev in the elimination round and then Greg James’ Lamborghini in the final. All in all it provided enough points for her to win the championship with one event remaining in the season.

“We had a nice side by side run against Jon and then we were lucky to come out the other end of the final against Greg as the winners.

“Thanks to all the Perth Motorplex staff and volunteers and my crew for all their hard work as always this season.”

Mellitt will have the chance to make some victory laps at this Saturday’s 96fm Powerpalooza, where she will take on an eight car field that includes some of the most unique cars in Western Australian motorsport. Norbert Claite’s supercharged Jaguar, Brett Stewart’s Toyota Celica Funny Car and Vince Belladonna’s classic Holden Torana are just a few of the sweet entries that will be on track from 10am on Saturday.
