Morgan to miss season opener

2013 ANDRA Top Fuel champion Darren Morgan has made the shock announcement that he will miss the season opening round in Perth on January 10 and 11, 2014.

A New Year’s Eve email to supporters of the team made it clear that without sponsorship the team would not be making the three day drive across the country to race.

It will be the first event Darren Morgan (pictured above at Calder, image by Hayley Turns) has missed since the team’s formation in 2007.

“At this time we are sad to announce we will not be campaigning the first event of the 2014 ANDRA Drag Racing Series in Perth,” the team wrote.

“Unfortunately we have been unable to secure sufficient sponsorship to enable us to compete at this event. We are working diligently towards our goal of competing for the remainder of the 2014 ANDRA season.”

Believed to be attending the season opener currently are Phil Lamattina, Martin Stamatis, Mark Sheehan and Rapisarda Racing.

When asked last season about the viability of combining Nitro Funny Car with Top Fuel even for a short period of time while numbers were down, Top Fuel team representative Renzo Pinazza said: “There is no need to do that, we have up to 12 Top Fuel cars ready to go for next season.”
