New Zealand’s Barry Plumpton has been decimating Australian nitrous records this year, but there is now a local challenger preparing to debut a former NHRA championship-winning Pro Modified Pontiac Firebird.
Sydney’s Stephen Howe has landed the former team Al-Anabi Racing Pontiac Firebird to take on Pro Xtreme and chase Plumpton’s record runs.
The car has done very little track time since winning the NHRA championship, with a best of 5.95 at 236mph before ending up in Howe’s possession. Powered by an 820ci Reher-Morrison billet bullet with four kits of nitrous, and backed by a Rossler three-speed transmission, the car comes with all the trick parts. However this set up will make way for more cubes in the future with a 959ci, six-nitrous kit monster planned in the next year or so.
The team’s debut has been slowed with the leaded fuel ban, meaning they had to source unleaded fuels to import for heavy nitrous use which will work with their current setup, but are confident in the fuel they have found and will be looking to hit the track for testing soon.
