The first chance to blow away New Year cobwebs at Sydney Dragway for racers came in the form of a Full Throttle Friday, the event was a little subdued entry wise but still packed plenty of pedal to metal action.
A couple of Group One cars came to play, Mark Belleri missed the first round of the Top Doorslammer championship in Perth and looked to make some check out passes before loading the car into the container to contest round two also in Perth.
Jeff Wilson struck trouble on the tricky track in what was stifling conditions, you can read and see more about that here: http://dragnews.com.au/index.php/news-all/local-news/2638-another-wild-night-for-jeff-wilson-video
Matty Evans and Ally Stewart unveiled their blown alky FED, those who bought Drag News Magazine would of had a sneak peak in the last issue.
With the help of FED specialists Geoff and Graham Blake along with a small army of others, Evans turned the tyres for first time ever on track but a high idle forced him to drive it through to the braking area.
A closed track hire on the Saturday allowed the team back out and they delivered with a series of very lazy eight second runs over 170mph from the KB motivated machine.
Bear in mind Evans has never driven anything down a drag strip before and so far has been impressive in his approach with the task at hand.
Rob Taylor also attended the closed test day which turned out to be a high 30 degree stinker, Taylor managed two passes, the best being a tyre turning 6.7 at 215mph for the Outlaw Camaro.
The GAS Motorsports prepared Scion was back on track with Joe Signorelli behind the wheel, the car is owned by Karl Hammoud however, and it was nothing but violent tyre shake for them.
The eyes have it for Andrew Maratos.
Plenty of tough sedans mainly of varying Pro Street guises were testing at the Full Throttle Friday and the closed test day in preparation for the opening round on the APSA series at South Coast Raceway next month.
Rob Godfrey’s TOYTOO Torana is just mint, and can run the numbers too going 7.90 at 172mph.
Marc Leake blistered a 7.39 at 201mph on radials in the heat with his twin turbo Torana, his first double ton pass.
A string on 7.9’s from Steve Bezzina’s radial XW also came in the heat.
Perry Bullivant was struggling for bite on track conditions over 150 degrees.
A very tidy True Street Torana of Aaron Meneghel debuted with BG Race Engine power and a driver learning to leave with a transbrake.
Gary Halpin closed the night out bending the Dato chasing his first seven, you can read and see more about that here: http://dragnews.com.au/index.php/news-all/local-news/2641-video-dicing-datsuns
I just love Colin Boyd’s American beast of a Chevelle, Boyd has so far gone 9.12 at 151mph without much effort from the 582 cube BBC.
A reminder to do up bonnet catches.
Drive up from the ‘Gong, run 9.78 at 136mph then drive the 100km back home, not a bad effort for Jason Gynn and his Pac Performance primed RX4.
The new year has seen a crop of new Junior Dragster pilots replenish the class from the ones who have graduated last season, like son of a Super Gasser in Lethal Luke Romeo.
Third generation racers Joe Polito Jr and Nicholas Polito, has to be a first Polito’s not in a Ford?
Joel Burns son of chassis builder Craig Burns.
Bill Perkovski Jr I am sure will be joining the Pro Street ranks in the future with dad Perko.
Tristian Barber has been making his first runs in a Junior, father Bill runs in Super Sedan with a EH Holden.
Max De Main has joined his brother Oscar in the JD ranks.
