Veteran Steven Ham will be a cautious participant at the Santo’s Super 3 Extreme Drag Race presented by Uplift Cranes and Titan Cranes this Easter weekend even though he knows being cautious could punt his team from the running.
At Round 1 of the Top Alcohol ANDRA Drag Racing Series in Perth, failed wiring and throttle control prevented Ham and his East Coast Lubes/Mobil 1 backed Funny Car from making the eight-car show.
The Super 3 is built around the three round format so Ham won’t have to worry about qualifying for an abbreviated field at Willowbank Raceway, though he acknowledged the team needs some time to iron out the kinks.
“The car is ready to go but yes, I need more time to test and get our head around how the new cylinder heads make power and where,” he said.
“We are struggling with this the more we hot it up. We nearly have the engine tuned how it should be to make maximum power, though the rate of acceleration and how the clutch then applies, catches us out at the moment. We will be conservative this round.”
Ham said the three round format used at the event is great for spectators but warned teams it could come back to bite them.
“This format does keep the crowd entertained and gets the cars back out there, though the cars with the best crews can get bumped out from not trying hard enough and being conservative.”
