Nostalgia drag racing action will be the name of the game this Sunday (9 August) at Willowbank Raceway, with the on-track racing action from more than 120 machines of yesteryear set to be supported by the biggest Shannons Insurance Show and Shine yet.
Providing as much colour and excitement off the track as the drag racing does on it, the Shannons Insurance Show and Shine has this year been expanded significantly.
Eighteen show and shine awards – three times more than has ever been offered as part of the event previously – will be on offer this Sunday to honour the best machines on show and the efforts of their owners.
Ron Whelan – president of the Kustoms of Australia Car Club (Gold Coast) and a member of the organising staff for this Sunday’s event – expects to have 30 members from his own club participating in the Show and Shine.
“I think it is really important that the Show and Shine has been expanded as it allows better recognition of those that participate in this event and their passion, their time and their effort that they pour into their machines,” said Whelan, who has been involved in drag racing since 1966.
Best Australian Vehicle, Best USA Vehicle, Best Hot Rod, Best Ford, Best Mopar, Best Chev, Best Pontiac, Best Convertible, Best Custom, Best Pickup, Best Muscle Car, Best Classic, Best Standard Paint, Best Custom Paint, Best in Show, Best Bike, Best American Bike and Best Represented Car Club will all be awarded this Sunday as part of the festivities. Judging will take place from 11.00am, with participation available at no extra cost other than the general event admission fee – entry forms will be available at the Show and Shine area.
The Shannons Insurance Show and Shine will be just one part of a hive of activity at what is Queensland’s premier drag racing facility, in celebration of all things ‘yesteryear’. 124 racers on two and four wheels have entered for the event, which will host racing from Top Eliminator, Quick Eliminator, as, Hot Rod, Vintage Gas, US Muscle, Aussie Muscle and Retro Bikes categories, with the on-track action kicking off at 8.00am. Spectator admission is just $25.00 for adults (just $20.00 for students with ID) with children aged 13 and under gaining FREE admission.
“Most come to this event to relive the ‘good old days’ but at the same time we are working hard to introduce the younger generation to our beloved sport of yesteryear,” said Whelan.
“Nostalgia Drag Racing at Willowbank Raceway offers something different to fans of this segment of our sport, offering not only a Show and Shine but also drag racing and a wide array of entertainment options both on and off the track all under the one umbrella.
“As one of the best facilities in this great country, Willowbank Raceway is a fantastic place to enjoy the nostalgia action with the whole family.”
