Palmyra Sugar City nitro attack

There is nothing better to beat the COVID-19 blues than a shot of nitromethane.

While the majority of tracks in Australia have been affected by COVID restrictions and limitations, Palmyra Dragway is set to explode this October with a nitro grudge race between two of the quickest and baddest Top Fuel motorcycles in Australia.

Chris “Nitro Voodoo” Matheson and John Zahra will be “loaded for bear” in an all or nothing grudge race.

Located in Mackay, in central Queensland, Palmyra Dragway is the oldest privately owned and operated drag racing venue in Australia.

Since it’s opening in 1968, Palmyra Dragway has hosted many spectacular events, and has always made it a priority to continually look for new and exciting ways of promoting the venue to the wider community.

So, what better than a nitro grudge race headlining the Sugar City 1000 on October 2nd.

“I’m really looking forward to this event,” said Matheson. John and I went head-to-head all last season and we were fortunate to come out on top winning the National Championship for our seventh time.

“Racing John at his home track will be tough, he knows every inch of the track and will no doubt have the home town crowd cheering him on.

“We have changed our ignition system on the bike and it’s untested under race conditions. All going well it will give us an edge and we can put the pressure on John.

“It’s a long drive in the “Nitro Voodoo” race transporter from Brisbane to Mackay so I’m not going up there to take it easy, we will be bringing everything, including the kitchen sink”, finished Matheson.

Zahra added, “It’s going to be a blast to have Matho at my home track. I’ve got a bit of a home track advantage knowing the track and its characteristics. It will come down to a tuner’s race – not a power race. All going well it would be good to win over Matho, and take the No.1 off him on my home track.”

Also on the program will be Pro Turbo and Street Rotaries and supported by Open Bikes, Super Comp, Comp and Juniors.

The track will also be raising money on the day for a local organisation called Selectability Mackay. They have started the “Real Mates Talk” Initiative in Mackay, raising the issue of Mental Health in the region and ensuring anyone who needs the support knows who to call and how to get help. And finally, the track will be auctioning off a Startline Experience for the Top Fuel Bikes and the Pro Rotary class Round 1. All funds going to the group above.

This event is supported by: Mackay Regional Council, CQ Rotary, All Paint Solutions, One Industries, Full Lock Auto, Power Seals, Tincone Abrasive Blasting, Mackay Kawasaki, DRC Rollers, Australian Conveyer Technologies (ACT), Tutt Bryant Hire and Filtawash Mackay.
